Hunter's mark

PROP ART – HUNTER'S MARK
=================================
I'd wanted to try photogrammetry for a while, and a couple of months ago I came across a pair of binoculars at a flea market that seemed like a great subject to scan.
=================================
Preparation
=================================
My equipment was far from ideal, an old DSLR with a scratched lens and 12MP sensor, but I figured it was worth attempting. I picked up an X-Rite ColorChecker to allow for proper color correction in post. To keep the camera locked on a tripod and shoot at low ISO with a slower shutter speed, I used a black lazy susan to be able to rotate binoculars, maximizing the image quality I could squeeze out of the old sensor.
=================================
Capture
=================================
I waited for an overcast day and shot on my balcony to get soft, diffuse lighting. I rotated the turntable with the binoculars in various positions, trying to maximize overlap between shots to give RealityScan the best chance of finding control points automatically.
=================================
Processing, Reconstruction
=================================
I color-corrected the images in Darktable, then brought them into RealityScan, which luckily resolved everything as a single component straight away.
=================================
Retopology
=================================
I used Quad Draw in Blender to manually build a clean low-poly mesh over the scan, then reprojected the texture information back onto it inside RealityScan.
=================================
Texture Cleanup Delighting
=================================
Any problematic areas on the texture were cloned over using Blender's Texture Paint mode. I then ran the texture through Agisoft Delighter to remove baked-in ambient occlusion and highlights.
=================================
Material Creation
=================================
In Substance Painter, I reconstructed roughness from the albedo and manually tweaked both roughness and metalness to get closer to physically accurate results.
I brought the low-poly into Unreal Engine and iterated on the materials, going back and forth between Painter and Unreal until everything looked right in-engine.
=================================
Diorama Presentation
To round out the presentation, I built a small diorama using assets from Quixel's library, allowing me to quickly create a scene that contextualizes and supports the binoculars as the hero asset.
